Atlantis is where the beginnings of legend and myth take place. First reported by the Greek philosopher Plato in the fourth century BC, it has become one of the greatest legends of a lost world in our time. Atlantis is said by some to have achieved a technological knowledge as great as our own before plunging into a great body of water - usually the Atlantic Ocean.
Countless theories on its location, destruction and people have sprung up over the centuries. It has been placed anywhere from Antartica to Ireland.
I'm not going to get into all the details in this article, I'm just going to tell you what I believe from all the works I've read. This isn't something I can tell you from experience - it's all just book knowledge, but that's the way things go sometimes.
I believe that Atlantis was an ancient continent located in the Atlantic Ocean. All the other theories just don't fit for me. Atlantis was supposed to be a continent, not a little island located by Greece, or Ireland - which is still above land and has no trace of advanced civilizations. Antarctica is a different story which I won't get into here, but I will say that buried beneath all that ice is somthing we would never have thought to be there.
I believe that Atlantis was an advanced civilization. According to some such as Edgar Cayce, they were advanced enough to have television and nuclear power. I'm not completely convinced on this point, but I do believe they were advanced enough to at least be in line with the late 18th to early 19th century. I think electricity was used and some of this knowledge may even have been passed down to the Egyptians.
I believe that Atlantis did have airplanes or some other kind of flying machines. When you can find ancient maps detailing unknown parts of the earth with extreme accuracy you know there's something our modern society is missing. You can also look at the Hindus and Buddhists with there knowledge of ancient flying machines, called vimanas
, which are referred to in the Ramayana and other texts. For some strange reason, many of the diagrams of these resemble modern UFO sketches and photographs.
I believe sometime around 10,500 BC., Atlantis went through some cataclysmic episode that sent it to the bottom of the Atlantic. Whether its destruction was man-made or natural, I'm not completely sure, however, I do think it was a mix of the two.
Once Atlantis sunk, the survivors - some which may have known beforehand of the doom - then dispersed throughout the globe. They brought their stories of a great flood and passed down tales of an ancient time with mythical heroes and gods.
I think the Sphynx and possibly the Great Pyramids of Giza were built around this time as a time-marker for future generations, or possibly some other reason that we'll never know about.
We are slowly uncovering underwater structures throughout the Atlantic Ocean. I think with time more and more will be found and as our technology and submersive vehicles get better, so will our knowledge of the ocean depths. Atlantis may never rise - literally - as many people believe Cayce meant, but it will at least rise one day into the scientific community as a new-found-land.
Whatever the future holds, I do know there are too many unsolved riddles which point to an advanced civilization in our remote past. I think Atlantis will rise again and I hope I'm there to see it when it does.
