The Etheric Body is not to be confused with the astral body. Whereas the astral body is what we use to travel the astral planes with, the etheric body remains attached to the physical at all times. If the etheric body stays away for too long, the body will decay and eventually die.
   The etheric body is non-physical, but will produce the ectoplasm famous from movies like Ghostbusters. The etheric body can be seen as a light blue or gray haze extending within a few inches of the physical body and within the colourful auric body. It is a way to transfer the body's energy to and from the astral plane. It can be thought of as our body's life-long battery, energizing us with the power of the astral plane and healing us from within.
