The Grim Reaper is not really a bald guy who joined Bill & Ted's excellent band, he's a symbol of death. His is also known as Death. He is also a star in heavy metal and death metal music, but he doesn't usually play the bass guitar. He likes to model his fashionable attire and his morbidly handsome figure, adorning the covers and inserts of many an album.
He walks around with his black robe and long sickle. On occasion, he likes to strip out of his robe and walk around in rags or even nothing at all. At times he can be seen riding a black horse or brandishing his wings. Sometimes he's portrayed as a dead man, but most times as a skeleton.
The belief in the Grim Reaper most likely stems from an old practice dating as far back as the 9th century in Romania and Hungary. When a person died, a sickle was laid on his/her body to remind them that they could no longer wander the land of the living. The sickle portrayed the cutting down of life - the sickle being used for cutting crops. That's about all there is to it. It's rather simple once you know about the sickle.
