Pegasus Statue on an Opera House    Like a lot of the other articles in the mythical creatures section, I'll keep this one short with just a brief description since I have no idea where Pegasus' historically correct origin lies - or any theories on him.
So starting, Pegasus - the flying horse - is a creature of Greek Mythology. Pegasus was nothing more than a horse with wings. He flew around and some say that wherever his feet touched ground a spring came forth - or something like that.

Pegasus' Family

Pegasus was son of Poseidon and Medusa and was the brother of the giant, Chrysaor. There's different explanations to Pegasus and Chrysaor's births, but they generally have to do with Medusa being killed or hurt. One story has them being born from her neck as she was beheaded; another has them growing from the ground where her blood fell.
Pegasus was untameable until Bellerophon somehow slept with Athena and magically gained a golden bridle. He used this and was able to tame the great Pegasus. Together they rode and Bellerophon killed the Chimaera. Then as Bellerophon's head began to grow alongside his ego he tried flying to the top of Olympus with Pegasus to go meet the Gods. Pegasus was too wise for this and threw Bellerophon off to wander on his ego-trip-self. Zeus took Pegasus into the Olympus stables and set him to work bringing lightning and thunderbolts to the ruler.
Pegasus eventually married Euippe and they had plenty of flying horse babies. In time, he was turned into a constellation and one day a feather fell back to the Earth in Turkey. That about sums up Pegasus.

As I sometimes do, here's a few pictures brought to you from Art.com. Clicking on the pictures brings you a larger picture. I'm not encouraging anyone to buy anything (unless you want to, of course), it just means I can put pictures on the website without fear of copyright laws.
