Electronic FogIn February 1996, Gernon was (un?)lucky enough to once again experience the strange fog in the Bermuda Triangle. After taking off from Florida, he was contacted by a friend, Carl Burton, who had taken off 15 minutes before him. Burton said that he was turning around due to heavy fog in the area. Sure enough, Gernon got caught in the fog once again. He called Miami Flight Service for an update on weather conditions in Miami and was told visibility was six miles and there was no fog. He asked where the fog he was in ended and the weather briefer told him, "I have no idea what you're looking at. There's no fog anywhere in this area." Gernon didn't know what to do so he flew over the ocean in hopes of losing the fog - but it didn't disappear. He then tried studying it and noticed that directly underneath him there was no fog. As they flew the hole in the fog below moved with them as though an invisible cylindrical force-field was attached to the plane. Gernon says, "I could see the earth passing below us. We couldn't get out of the fog. It seemed to be moving right along with us, at about 180 miles per hour." It wasn't until 4 years later that Gernon realized that his plane wasn't flying through the fog - the fog was attached to the plane! Even after the fog disappeared and he was landing he could still see faint traces of a halo surrounding the plane. Later, he coined the term "electronic fog" because (like another pilot) it reminded him of a television when the cable goes out.
The Hutchison EffectThe book goes on to other similiar cases which back up the electronic fog theory but I can't go adding every one of them here. Basically, Gernon believes the phenomenon to be an undiscovered meteorological process in which the fog materializes and then clings to an object. This strange occurence has been noticed in all areas of the world even though the Bermuda Triangle has seen more unexplained disappearances and significantly more publicity. Something that strongly backs up Gernon's theory is the work of John Hutchison, a Vancouver, Canada, researcher who became fascinated by the works of Nikola Tesla - particularly free energy, levitation, invisibility, and time travel. Hutchison, who could be referred to as a "mad scientist", has produced levitation in laboratories using generators and wavelengths. He has tried lifting all kinds of metal, wood and other materials and has even levitated heavy objects such as a 60 pound cannonball. Hutchison's experiments have been photographed and observed by many and one of the strange facts is that the floating objects are surrounded by a gray fog. Gernon believes this to be the same mechanisms at work as with his plane in the Bermuda Triangle. It could also be a similiar project to that of the top-secret AUTEC experiments which we'll get to in the next paragraph.
Two Main Bermuda Triangle TheoriesOne thing I've mentioned on occasion is the fact that some people don't take all theories and paranormal topics seriously. They'll talk for hours about aliens and flying saucers and then laugh when you mention ghosts or psychics. This is not the case with the book. Gernon and MacGregor examine all possible theories and explanations. They look at UFO's and how many UFO's have been reported in the area - Gernon even witnessing them himself. They look at Atlantis and the "fire-crystals" used as a power source. These fire-crystals could still be emitting electrical charges from beneath the ocean bed today causing strange events to happen in the area. This has always been my preferred theory but I'm also an Atlantis myth loving person. Another theory involves the Navy's equivalent of Area 51 - AUTEC, a top-secret facility located on Andros Island in the Bahamas. AUTEC deals with advanced technological capabilities including its "Electronic Warfare Simulator". A realeased document states the system "will generate complex, dynamic, electromagnetic signal environments at the radio frequency (RF) level." The electronic warfare simulator can illuminate aircrafts, ships and submarines as they move through the Caribbean. Again, the AUTEC facility is now the Navy's Area 51 (UFO's in the area as well) and there is much controversy and speculation as to the goings-on at the base.
The Mystery Lives OnThis article wasn't supposed to turn into a book review but I really enjoyed it - it took me longer to write this article than read the book!! It's hard to choose between the two main theories behind the Bermuda Triangle mystery and it could possibly be a mixture of both of them causing the disappearances and strange events. The AUTEC theory would explain a lot and delves into the realm of conspiracy theories - the government testing its powers on unsuspecting citizens. This theory doesn't account for reports recorded centuries earlier. The Atlantis "fire-crystals" (or "firestones" as I've always called them) could still be producing energy 12 thousand years after the destruction of Atlantis. Where do all these missing ships and planes disappear to? Are they hiding at the bottom of the ocean? Have they been transported into another dimension? Will they reappear at varying intervals in time and space? Only time, controversy, speculation and the works of Bruce Gernon and other dedicated Bermuda Triangle researchers will give us an answer.
