SPECIAL thanks to Doug! Anyhow, I have the hard time of passing through the break n pop bursting out of body feelings as well. The only insight I can give you is meditation. If you need any handy types of meditation, contact me by all means! The "Soo-Humm" technique works, not only for getting shut-eye, but awakening.

I actually use the shortness of breath to help me stay in that state. Not only do I focus on counting to 3 over and over in my mind's eye but I'm feeling my breaths drop down to almost nothing. At first I focus on the breathing until it's slow enough I can forget about it - tranferring the focus over to my mind's eye. When you're sleeping you hardly breathe at all but when your mind's awake it feels like you're becoming short of breath. My biggest problem is the excitement as the obe is about to begin - my heart beats too fast, my breathing picks up, and I find myself wide awake. Sometimes I'll manage to get out of body for a whole 5 seconds and snap out of it thanks to this. I think it's like an adrenaline rush. From what you're saying though it sounds like the first breathing problem I just mentioned might be the case. Just stay relaxed and forget about the breathing.
The more you try the easier it'll become.

I learned the same breathing technique on how to induce an OBE about 15 years ago and tried it often for years off and on. I never got much success with it until I was introduced to Tai Chi meditation. That's where you take your inner energy (Chi) and practice moving it throughout your body through a successive repetition of slow/ deliberate body movements. I found that after doing tai chi even just a few times my psychic focus and energy work became more successful and so did my OBE work. I have been able to get stronger meditations as well. My OBE technique is to breathe in 1 less count for everytime you breathe out. Ex. breathe in for 3 slow counts then out for 4; breathe in for 4 slowly then out for 5; keep doing that until you get til about 27 or so then your mind will be so relaxed your mind will be able to fly out of your body then It'll probably freak you out when you 1st do it. Just keep at it and I wouldn't go too far up in the numbers. No higher than 30's or you'll pass out. The idea is that your brain is slowly being oxygen depleted a bit which makes it harder for you to mentally let go! It works for me. I hope It'll work for you too and don't forget, try Tai Chi. I got a video of it I watch from time to time. I promise It will help all your perceptive abilities. Good luck!
